DEMYSTIFYING THE USE OF GLASSES

There are lots of misconceptions about the usage of glasses. I have had many encounters with clients who had their poor vision being improved by prescription lenses but out rightly refused wearing glasses because of what they have heard about it. There are parents whose children cannot see from the board in school, hence, always performing poorly but have vowed never to allow their children to use glasses because of myths they have heard. As all human beings are not the same size and height, so are our eyes. Some of us have our eyes developing to become a little longer than normal or shorter than normal. There are also other factors like the refractive state of your eyes being too strong or weak, among others. Glasses are simply prescribed to compensate for that error which occurs from the factors mentioned above. When you have the glasses on, it compensates for the error by either reducing the power of your eyes or increasing it for you to see well. Prescription lenses are external optical aids that can never damage your eyes.

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE MYTHS ABOUT USING GLASSES.

Myth No. 1:WEARING OF GLASSES MAKES YOU DEPENDENT ON THEM

This is not true. Prescription glasses do not change your eyes. They are given to you to help improve your vision so you can wear your glasses as frequent as you want to see well. You might just get used to your improved vision, thereby using it frequently but that does not mean you are dependent on it. You are just enjoying the way you see when you have it on.

Myth No. 2:WEARING THE WRONG PRESCRIPTION CAN DAMAGE YOUR EYES

If   you wear glasses that do not belong to you or even wrong prescription glasses for a long time, what can happen are, you might not see clearly, you may have headache or feel dizzy. This will never damage your eyes.

Myth No. 3:WEARING GLASSES CAN MAKE YOUR EYES BECOME SMALLER

This is a holy lie and whoever started it has really caused a lot of people their good vision. After your eyes are fully developed, they remain the same size and shape in its socket in the skull till you die. Aside injury to the eye or some infection that can make your eye ball shrink, glasses can never make your eyes smaller.

Myth No. 4: SUNGLASSES ARE THE BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM THE SUN

Just because sunglasses look dark does not mean they can give you protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Most sunglasses on our markets do not give any protection from the sun’s harmful rays .There are other lenses that can be prescribed by the optometrist to help protect your eyes from harmful radiations. If you want sunglasses, make sure it has the properties needed to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

Myth No. 5: DOING EYE EXERCISE WILL KEEP YOU FROM NEEDING GLASSES

The quality of your vision depends largely on the shape of your eyes, how healthy your eye tissues are and many other factors. Eye exercise may have some benefits. However, even if you do them, you will still need glasses if you have a refractive error.

Myth No. 6: EATING LOTS OF CARROTS WILL MAKE YOU NOT TO NEED GLASSES

Carrots contain vitamin A, which is good for your eyes but dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits are even better. They can protect your eyes form cataracts and age –related macular degeneration but they cannot correct problems like short-sightedness or long-sightedness, which is what glasses are for.

Myth No. 7: YOU DON’T LOOK GOOD IN EYE GLASSES

This is one of the most outrageous myths about glasses. Whoever attests to this myth doesn’t know style. Glasses actually add class and sophistication to your looks.

Myth No. 8: WEARING GLASSES WILL WEAKEN YOUR EYES

Glasses are worn to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia. Glasses do nothing more than helping you see well. Glasses are external optical aids that improve the vision of people with blurred vision caused by refractive errors. The exceptions are the kinds given temporarily to children with crossed eyes or lazy eyes to help straighten their eyes or improve their vision. Not wearing such glasses may result in permanent vision defects.
